…In ancient geography, it was the area from the Gulf of Iskenderun (Alexandretta) in the north or south of the Taurus Mountains to the Sinai Peninsula in the south, roughly corresponding to the area from the southeastern tip of Turkey to the Lebanon Republic, the Syrian Arab Republic, Israel, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Greeks gave Syria the adjective "koilē" (mountainous, lowland) and contrasted it with Syria, or Mesopotamia, "between the two rivers, potamos, meso." The topography is generally vertical, characterized by a coastal plain that is often very narrow, a hilly and mountainous area to the east, a deep rift valley that reaches below sea level, consisting of the Orontes River basin, Lake Tiberias (Galilee), the Jordan River, the Dead Sea, and the dried-up Arabah, and a plateau area that continues to the Syrian Desert to the east. …
