Malekula Island (English spelling)
Located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, Vanuatu is the second largest island in the Republic of Vanuatu. It has an area of 2,023 km2 and a population of 19,000 (1989). The inhabitants are Melanesian, and most of the people who once lived inland have now moved to the coast, and the island has a long history of contact with Europeans. The inland area is covered with dense forests, and is still home to about 250 people who reject Christianity. The people in the south are called Small Nanbas. Nanbas is pidgin English for penis case, and European coconut plantation owners named them Small Nanbas after seeing the penis cases made from banana leaves worn by the men.
