...Population: 481,000 (1991). A city of ancient origins formerly called Koil, it has maintained its cultural traditions since coming under Muslim rule in the 12th century. Aligarh Fort, said to have been built in 1524, still remains in the northern outskirts of the city, and many mosques attract visitors.
