Although it is a school of thought within modern economics, the term has been used in a broader sense for a long time since the end of World War II, and refers to economists who, based on JM Keynes's General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money, attempted to extend the short-term theory of effective demand to long-term dynamic analysis and worked on macro dynamic theory. In the 1950s and 1960s, they refined the discussion of long-term economic development, including cyclical growth models and technological progress analysis, but after the war, as Western capitalist countries achieved steady economic growth, the view of the economy based on an understanding of market mechanisms, known as the neoclassical synthesis, became dominant.

現代経済学に占める一学派であるが，第2次大戦後より長らく広義に使われてきており，J.M.ケインズの《雇用･利子および貨幣の一般理論(一般理論)》に基づいて，その短期の有効需要理論を長期動態分析にまで拡張しようとしてマクロ的動学理論に取り組んだ経済学者たちを総称するものであった。彼らによって1950年代から60年代において循環的成長モデルや技術進歩分析など長期経済発展の議論に彫琢（ちようたく）をみたのであるが，戦後，欧米の資本主義諸国が順調な経済成長を遂げるにつれ，その経済像は新古典派総合といわれる市場機構についての理解に立脚するものが優勢となっていった。
