Languages that are related to one another, that is, languages that are thought to have developed from the same ancestor, are said to be of the same lineage. The study of this kind of lineage between languages, or whether it exists at all, is called linguistic phylogenetics. It often refers to research that seeks to determine to which other languages a language whose lineage is not yet known is related.
