Domestic Industrial Exposition. An exhibition of domestic products held as part of the Meiji government's policy to encourage industry. Triggered by Japan's participation in the Paris World's Fair in 1867, the Vienna World's Fair in 1873, and the Philadelphia World's Fair in 1876, the plan was based on a proposal by Okubo Toshimichi, and the first exposition was held in Ueno in 1877, with over 80,000 exhibits and over 450,000 visitors. The exhibits were mainly craft items, but the number of machines increased as the exhibitions continued. Along with the Comprehensive Exhibition, it had a major impact on the development and spread of industrial technology. The fifth exposition was held in Osaka in 1902, and since then, many expositions have been sponsored by prefectures or newspapers.
