Born April 17, 1837 in Hartford, Connecticut, USA.
Died March 31, 1913. Rome, Italy. A major American financial capitalist. Studied at the University of Gottingen in Germany, he joined Duncan Sherman & Co. in New York in 1857, and was active in the financial world as the New York agent for George Peabody & Co., in which his father, JS Morgan, was a partner, and for JS Morgan & Co. (London), which succeeded him, from 1960 to 1964. In 1871 he became a partner in Drexel Morgan & Co., and in 1895 he acquired the firm and established JP Morgan & Co. As an investment banker, he underwrote US government bonds, reorganized and stabilized the American railroad industry, and succeeded in realizing giant companies such as United States Steel, General Electric, and International Harvester, becoming a central figure in the American financial world and a symbol of the concentration of economic power. In 1912, 11 partners of Morgan & Co. held 72 executive positions in 47 major American companies, forming the Morgan conglomerate. He also donated vast sums of money to hospitals, churches, libraries, and museums.

[Died] November 12, 1980. Orléans, Loire. French novelist and journalist. He entered the world of literature through the anti-German Resistance movement. He was instrumental in the founding of the newspaper Les Lettres françaises, and later served as its editor-in-chief. His works include La Marque de l'homme (1944), a book published as part of the Midnight Series, and Le Voyageur sans boussole (51), a traveller without a compass.

[Died] December 20, 2016. French film actress from Meudon. She rose to fame after co-starring with Jean Gabin in Marcel Carné's "Quai des Fogs" (1938). In 1946, she played the blind protagonist in "Symphonie Pastorale," based on André Gide's novel, and won the Best Actress award at the first Cannes Film Festival. In 1969, she was awarded the Legion of Honor.

[Died] June 12, 1924. French archaeologist from Marseille. A pioneer in prehistoric archaeology of the Near East. He conducted archaeological research in Memphis (Egypt) and excavated the inscription of the Code of Hammurabi and Elamite historical documents at the ruins of Susa (Iran). His main work is La Préhistoire orientale (Prehistoric Archaeology of the Near East) (3 volumes, 1925-27).
