A famous runner known as the "Super Express of Dawn." Born in Oike, Nishihama Village, Hikawa County, Shimane Prefecture (now Izumo City). The tenth child of a family of Shinto priests, he was adopted into the Yoshioka family after graduating from elementary school. He graduated from Shimane Normal School and went on to Tokyo Higher Normal School. At the 1932 (Showa 7) Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he placed 6th in the 100m track and field race. A Japanese man who was just 160cm tall, he took the lead up to 60m against big men. While the winner, Eddie Tolan (USA), was known as the "Midnight Super Express" for his powerful run wearing a Japanese flag headband, Tolan was called the "Super Express of Dawn." This was also due to his outstanding starting sense. After his retirement, his pupils included Hideo Iijima and Ikuko Yoda, but his Japanese record of 10.3 seconds (tied the world record) set in 1935 was broken by Iijima 29 years later. In 1978 (Showa 53), he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
