A Hemiptera insect of the Aleyrodidae family. It is a serious pest that causes great damage to vegetables and flowers grown in greenhouses and greenhouses in Europe, North and South America, and other parts of the world. Native to the southwestern part of North America, it invaded Japan in the early 1970s, and spread rapidly from Hokkaido to Okinawa due to the movement of tomato seedlings and ornamental plants. It parasitizes a wide variety of plants, with over 200 host plant species recorded in North America and over 130 in Japan. It infests vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, pumpkins, and beans, and flowers such as poinsettias, fuchsias, pelargoniums, and lantana, causing large outbreaks. 半翅目コナジラミ科の昆虫。ヨーロッパや南・北アメリカ各国をはじめ世界各地で,温室やハウス栽培の野菜や花卉に,大被害を与える重要害虫である。北アメリカ南西部の原産で,日本へは1970年代の初めころ侵入し,トマトの苗や観賞用植物の移動により,急速に北海道から沖縄まで広がった。きわめて多くの植物に寄生し,北アメリカでは200種以上,日本でも130種以上の寄主植物が記録されている。野菜ではトマト,ナス,キュウリ,カボチャ,インゲンなどに,花卉ではポインセチア,フクシア,ペラルゴニウム,ランタナなどに好んでつき大発生する。
