Long branch - Tochoushi

Japanese: 徒長枝 - とちょうし
Long branch - Tochoushi
A branch that is left growing and has a lot of momentum. If a branch is left as it is, too much of the tree's nutrients will flow to it, slowing down the growth of other branches. For trees that are growing or when you want to thicken the branches or trunks, they can be left as sacrificial branches. In either case, the branches will thicken without the tissue maturing, so flower buds and the like are less likely to bear fruit.

伸びたままの、勢いの強い枝のこと。徒長枝をそのままにしておくと、樹の養分がそこへ流れすぎるため他の枝の生長が遅くなる。養成中の樹や、枝・幹に太みを得たい場合は犠牲枝としてこれを放置することもある。いずれにしても組織の成熟を伴わないまま太っていくので、花芽などは結実しにくい。
