A type of tie-dyeing. Also known as tatami-shibori, it is done by folding fabric or washi paper and sandwiching it between two boards before dyeing it. This technique is also used for Arimatsu's Setsubana-shibori, which was once used to make diapers. The Kyokechi of Shosoin and later Itajime-Yuzen were dyed by sandwiching the fabric between embossed boards and pouring the dye through the holes. Today, the fabric is clamped between triangular or square boards and immersed in the dye liquid. The resulting continuous geometric patterns have a similar feel to kasuri (splash-like) patterns, so they are used for Japanese clothing and futon fabric, and washi paper is used for sliding doors and bookbinding.
