al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī (English spelling) alKhati bal Baghdadi

…In his History of the Conquest of the Maghreb, Ibn Abd al-Hakam, who lived in the 9th century, described the charm of Egypt (Fadayl) and the development of the old capital Fustat, south of Cairo, and Ibn Faqih (9th century) described Baghdad in detail, describing its geographical setting and the appearance of its vast cityscape. This tradition was continued by Baḥshal's (?-905) History of Wasit and al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī's (1002-71) History of Baghdad, but while both of these were geographical works that focused on people, al-Kindī (897-961) was the first to write a specialized book on Egyptian geography. Ibn Zūlāq (919-997) then wrote The Book of Egypt, and Naḥawī (?-1126) also wrote a geographical guide to Egypt, focusing on the new capital, Cairo, but these works have now been lost and are no longer known.

…These local histories have important historical value in that they convey detailed information not found in chronicled world history. Incidentally, al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī's (1002-71) History of Baghdad and Ibn 'Asākir's History of Damascus are called histories, but in reality they are collections of biographies of prominent people who were active in the area. In the 11th century, when the Islamic Empire broke up and experienced a military government in which military men such as the Mamluks exercised all authority over military, administrative, and financial matters on behalf of the caliph, many contemporary chronicles written by courtiers or bureaucrats appeared. …
