Born June 23, 1763 in Troisières, Martinique
[Died] May 29, 1814. Malmaison. Wife of Emperor Napoleon I of France. Real name Marie-Josèphe-Rose Tascher de la Pagerie. Married Viscount Beauharnais in 1779 and had two children (later Prince Eugène and Queen Hortense). Her husband was executed during the French Revolution and she was imprisoned, but was released nine days after the Thermidor and was praised for her beauty at a Paris salon. She met Napoleon through Rose and married him in March 1796. Shortly after that, Napoleon went to war as commander-in-chief of the Italian army, and she accompanied him. In 1804, she became empress when her husband became Emperor. Napoleon loved her passionately, but she was unable to have an heir and they divorced in 1809. She retired to Malmaison after receiving a huge fortune, but continued to correspond with Napoleon.

フランス皇帝ナポレオン1世の妃。本名 Marie-Josèphe-Rose Tascher de la Pagerie。 1779年ボーアルネ子爵と結婚,子供2人 (のちのウージェヌ親王とオルタンス王妃) をもうけた。夫はフランス革命で刑死し,みずからも投獄されたがテルミドール九日後釈放され,パリのサロンでその美貌をたたえられた。バラの紹介でナポレオンを知り,1796年3月結婚。その直後ナポレオンはイタリア軍総司令官として出陣し,彼女も同行した。 1804年夫の皇帝就任とともに皇后となる。ナポレオンの激しい情愛を受けたが,跡継ぎに恵まれず 1809年離婚。莫大な財産を受けてマルメゾンに隠居したが,ナポレオンとの文通は続けられた。
