A large river in southern Africa. It originates in the Drakensberg Mountains, flows west through South Africa, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean at the border with Namibia. Its largest tributary is the Vaal River. Its total length is 2,100 km. Its drainage basin covers most of South Africa. A long-term plan for the development of the Orange River was launched in 1962, and construction of dams and power stations is underway.
