In Islamic society, a person who delivers a sermon (khutba) in the name of the authority of the time prior to the Friday noon congregational prayer is called a khaṭib. Until the Umayyad dynasty (661-750), the caliph himself stood at the pulpit (minbar) of the mosque to deliver religious instruction and make public political decisions.

In Islam, a sermon given prior to the congregational prayer at noon on Friday and during the Eid prayers. The person who gives this is called a khaṭīb. The khutba is given twice, and the ritual is formulaic down to the last detail, with the person standing during the khutba and sitting between the first and second khutba.
