Eye Bank
An institution that provides corneas for transplantation. Also known as an eye bank, it registers people who wish to donate their eyes, and then after their death, it removes and preserves their eyes, and then it arranges for them to be placed in hospitals that are suitable for corneal transplants. In Japan, it was established in 1963, and was later stipulated in the Law Concerning Cornea and Kidney Transplants (1979), and is now established in university hospitals, national hospitals, etc.

角膜移植に際し,移植用角膜を提供する機関。目の銀行などと呼ばれる。眼球提供希望者の登録,その死後の眼球摘出・保存・角膜移植の適応患者の待つ病院への斡旋(あっせん)などを行う。日本では1963年に設立され,その後〈角膜及び腎臓の移植に関する法律〉(1979年)で規定され,大学病院,国立病院などに設置されている。
