A mammal of the Baleen whale suborder, Baleen whale family (illustration). A stocky whale that can reach a body length of 15m and is found widely throughout the world, from the tropics to the polar regions. It is characterized by a low dorsal fin and long pectoral fins that make up one-third of its body length. It is said to have been given this name because its dorsal fin resembles a seated man carrying a biwa on his back. There are fist-sized fleshy protuberances scattered on the head, each with a sensory hair at the top. The dorsal surface is blackish brown, and there is a white area on the ventral surface, but there is considerable individual variation. There are only 20 to 30 ridges. There are several hundred thin baleen plates on each side, and they are blackish brown in color.

ヒゲクジラ亜目ナガスクジラ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。熱帯から寒帯まで世界中に広く分布し，体長15mに達するずんぐりしたクジラ。低い背びれと体長の1/3に及ぶ長い胸びれが特徴。背びれが，琵琶を背負った座頭の姿に似ているところから，この名があるといわれる。頭部にはこぶし大の肉質の隆起が散在し，その頂に1本ずつ感覚毛が生える。背面は黒褐色，腹面には白色域があるが個体差が著しい。うねは少なく20～30本。ひげ板は左右に各三百数十枚あり，薄く，色は黒褐色。
