...There was a constant struggle for power among the three major political forces, led by the Bariba tribe, Sourou Migan Apithy (Yoruba tribe), and Justin Ahomadegbé (Fon tribe). The military got involved, and four coups were repeated before and after the military coup in 1972, when Major Ahmed Kérékou (1933- ) seized power. Kérékou, a young officer from a small tribe in the north (Zomba tribe), came to power at the young age of 39. In 1975, in order to put an end to the political struggles of the past, he adopted the name of the once-thriving Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria, rather than his own country, and changed the country's name to the People's Republic of Benin to express the Marxist-Leninist orientation of the Kérékou regime.
