...Furthermore, interest in demon possession was greatly heightened, as seen in the huge success of the movie The Exorcist. These were called pop magic or pop occult, and were popular among urban youth, but in the 1980s they were being absorbed into larger spiritual cultural trends such as mysticism and Eastern thought. Philosophical issues such as cosmology and natural theory based on magical interpretations also stimulated people in the early modern period, and by the end of the 18th century people were becoming interested in the fate of life after death.
