...The region is characterized by lowlands and plateaus made of sedimentary layers, peneplains with hills, and an extremely dry climate. The lowest point is the Karagiya lowland near the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, which is 132 meters below sea level, and there are also dried-up lake beds at around -30 meters in various places. The highest point is Mount Aktau (922 meters) in the Tamdytau mountain range, which rises like a peneplain in the Kyzylkum desert.
