Okinawa pufferfish - Okinawa pufferfish

A marine fish belonging to the order Tetraodontiformes and family Tetraodontiidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is widely distributed in the tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean south of Okinawa and the Indian Ocean. The body is dark brown on the back with numerous small circular white spots scattered across it. A yellow vertical line runs along the lower belly. It can reach a total length of 20 centimeters. Its gonads, skin, and muscles are poisonous. It is commonly found in shallow coastal waters of the Okinawa region. Young fish also live in brackish waters at the mouths of rivers. It is not considered edible.

硬骨魚綱フグ目フグ科に属する海水魚。沖縄以南の太平洋とインド洋の熱帯域に広く分布。体色は背側が暗褐色で、多数の小円形白色斑(はん)が散在する。腹側下方を1本の黄色縦線が走る。全長は20センチメートルに達する。生殖腺(せいしょくせん)と皮膚、筋肉に毒がある。沖縄地方の沿岸の浅所でごく普通にみられる。幼魚は河口の汽水域にも生息する。食用とはされていない。
