Kerckring's fold

The opening of the accessory pancreatic duct is located about 2 cm above the major papilla, and is called the minor papilla or minor duodenal papilla. In the duodenal lumen below the second part, numerous annular folds (Kerckring's folds) consisting of the mucosa and submucosa are formed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (Figure).

The structure of the duodenal wall is made up of layers of mucosa, submucosa, muscularis propria, and subserosa, from the luminal side. The outermost layer is covered by the serosa (peritoneum) on the anterior side (the abdominal cavity side) and continues to the retroperitoneum on the posterior side.

The wall of the small intestine is composed of the mucosa, muscularis mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa, and there are numerous transverse folds, or Kerckring's folds, on the mucosal surface. The Kerckring's folds are tall and densely arranged in the jejunum, but are short and rather sparsely arranged in the ileum.
