Timna

...Copper from Cyprus, which is related to the origin of the word copper, is well known, but the details of copper-producing sites around the Sinai Peninsula are being clarified by the recent results of metallurgical archaeology centered around the University of London. In particular, many mining sites, smelting furnaces, and tangles have been discovered in Timna, southern Yemen, and the development process from the initial collection of native copper to the smelting of oxide ores and the subsequent smelting of sulfide ores is gradually becoming clear. In Europe, areas where copper has been produced since the Bronze Age, such as the Mitterberg copper mine in Tyrol, and the Rio Tinto copper mine in Spain, are being investigated as targets of metallurgical archaeology.
