Japanese: クドキ(口説) - くどき

A term used in folk and music. It is a noun derived from the verb "kudoku," meaning to preach repeatedly, and generally refers to a section expressing affection, melancholy, etc. (1) A section in Heikyoku that has little melodic movement and is sung in a narrative tone. An example is "The more I leave, the more I return to Awa and Sanuki..." in Nasu no Yoichi. (2) A section in Noh plays that expresses feelings of nostalgia, heartbreak, etc., in a narrative tone that does not match the rhythm. Influenced by Heikyoku, it is mainly sung by the shite. Examples include "Until now, we have never met..." in Sumida-gawa and "These days, three people have been together..." in Shunkan.

歌謡･音楽用語。くり返して説くという意味の動詞〈くどく〉の名詞化で，一般に慕情，哀愁などを表現する個所をいう。(1)平曲で，旋律的な動きが少なく，語るような口調でうたう個所。《那須与一》の〈去るほどに阿波（あわ）讃岐（さぬき）に……〉などが例。(2)謡曲で，懐旧，傷心などの情を，拍子に合わない語りの口調であらわす個所。平曲の影響を受けたもので，主としてシテが謡う。《隅田川》の〈今まではさりとも逢わんを……〉，《俊寛（しゆんかん）》の〈この程は三人一所（いつしよ）にありつるだに……〉などが例。
