A term used in folk and music. It is a noun derived from the verb "kudoku," meaning to preach repeatedly, and generally refers to a section expressing affection, melancholy, etc. (1) A section in Heikyoku that has little melodic movement and is sung in a narrative tone. An example is "The more I leave, the more I return to Awa and Sanuki..." in Nasu no Yoichi. (2) A section in Noh plays that expresses feelings of nostalgia, heartbreak, etc., in a narrative tone that does not match the rhythm. Influenced by Heikyoku, it is mainly sung by the shite. Examples include "Until now, we have never met..." in Sumida-gawa and "These days, three people have been together..." in Shunkan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
