Order Hemiptera, suborder Homoptera, family Cicadidae. Also called periodical cicada. This cicada is famous for its long larval period of 17 years. It is distributed in the central and eastern United States. Body length is 20-30mm. Its body is black and its wings are transparent. When they emerge, they appear on the ground almost all at once, gathering in groups on trees, and males make a continuous metallic "zee" sound. There are two other closely related species of cicadas that also have a 17-year larval period, but they are said to have different cries. In addition, 13-year cycles are known for each of the three species.

半翅目同翅亜目セミ科。周期ゼミ periodical cicadaともいう。 17年という長い幼虫期間をもつことで有名なセミ。アメリカ合衆国中部および東部に分布する。体長 20～30mm。体は黒色で，翅は透明。羽化期にはほとんど一斉に地上に現れ，木に群がり，雄は金属音を含んだ「じー」という連続音で鳴く。 17年の幼虫期間をもつセミは他に近縁の2種があるが，鳴き声が異なるといわれる。また，3種それぞれに 13年周期型が知られている。
