Nasu no Yoichi - Nasu no Yoichi

Japanese: 那須与一 - なすのよいち
Nasu no Yoichi - Nasu no Yoichi
The title of a Heike song. A representative piece of narrative Hiroimono (pictures of things found in a bamboo pole). During the Battle of Yashima, the Heike side at sea dared the Genji side to shoot down a fan on the end of a pole, but the chosen young warrior Nasu no Yoichi Munetaka successfully shot it down. The lyrics and the music are both excellent masterpieces. The moment before the arrow is shot is told in a heroic Hiroimono melody of "low tone" and "high tone," and when the fan falls, the high-pitched "Hashiri Mie" is used, making it a highlight of the piece. There is a piece with the same theme on the Satsuma biwa, and there are also other Chikuzen biwa pieces such as "Ogi no Mato" (4-string) composed by Imamura Engai, "Ogi no Mato" (5-string) composed by Iida Koshun, and "Nasu no Yoichi" composed by Tachibana Asahi I.

Nasu no Yoichi

A samurai from the early Kamakura period. A vassal of the Kamakura shogunate in Nasu, Shimotsuke Province. Son of Taro Sukeyasu. His real name was Munetaka. During the Genpei War (the Jisho Civil War), he followed the army of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and in February 1185, at the Battle of Yashima in Sanuki, he saw the Taira forces sailing in boats on the sea with rising sun fans hoisted on the poles of their boats, and shot them down on Yoshitsune's orders. For this achievement, he was awarded reward land in the provinces of Tanba, Shinano, Wakasa, Bitchu, and Musashi, and became the head of the Nasu clan, but later became a monk and entered the Sokujoin temple in Fushimi, Kyoto.
