Yako (English spelling) yē hú

A Chinese bowed string instrument, a type of huqin. It is so named because the body is made from a coconut shell. The top plate of the body is made of paulownia wood and the neck is relatively long. It has two strings. Those made from relatively small coconut shells and with a short neck produce high notes and are called "hoko." 中国の擦弦楽器，胡琴の類。椰子の殻を胴とするのでこの名称がある。胴の表板は桐木製で棹は比較的長い。2弦。椰子の殻が比較的小さく，棹の短いものは高音を奏し，〈梆胡（ほうこ）〉と呼ばれる。地方劇梆子（ほうし）音楽の伴奏楽器として用いられてきた。【三谷 陽子】
