Khorāsān (English spelling)

Japanese: ホラーサーン（英語表記）Khorāsān

The name of a region stretching from Iran to Afghanistan. It is currently one of Iran's provinces, with an area of approximately 320,000 km2 and the largest provincial area in Iran. It has a population of 6 million (1991). Its capital is Mashhad. Khorasan means "the place where the sun khor rises." It once included the area south of Ma Wara al-Nahr and Afghanistan, with Merv, Herat and Balkh being major cities of Khorasan. It was a route south for nomads and was often invaded by them in ancient times. The Shiite movement became active in the late Umayyad period, and the Abbasid family took advantage of this movement to launch an armed uprising in Merv and overthrew the Umayyad dynasty (Abbasid Revolution.
