A village in Higashikubiki County in southern Niigata Prefecture. Population 3,294 (1995). It is located on the western edge of the Higashikubiki Hills, and borders Nagano Prefecture to the southeast. The Iida River, a tributary of the Hokura River, flows through the center of the village, and most of the cultivated land is rice terraces on the mountainside. In Tanahiro, upstream of the Iida River, is the Maki Oil Field, one of the old oil fields of Echigo, and at the end of the Meiji period, the village was a bustling oil-producing area. Agriculture has been centered on rice cultivation since the early modern period, but since the 1960s, attempts have been made to diversify, such as fattening Japanese beef cattle in the hills and growing tobacco. Many people commute to the neighboring city of Joetsu. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
