This long-established store developed from a kimono shop called Shirokiya that opened in Nihonbashi, Edo in 1662 (Kanbun 2) into a modern department store. In 1956 (Showa 31), it was taken over by Tokyu Corporation (now Tokyu) and became Tokyu Department Store Nihonbashi Branch. In January 1999 (Heisei 11), it closed its doors after 336 years of history. The founder, Omura Hikotaro (1636-1689), was from Omi. He went to Kyoto at the age of 17 or 18 and opened the lumber store Shirokiya, then moved to Edo at the age of 27, and is said to have become a successful kimono merchant in one generation. In 1886 (Meiji 19), they were one of the first to open a clothing department in the Shirokiya department store, sent the head of the family, Wakichirō (the 10th Hikotaro, 1869-1927), overseas to absorb new knowledge, and in 1903 (Meiji 36), changed the sales floor to a display style, making them pioneering department stores on a par with Mitsukoshi. The fire at their main store on December 16, 1932 (Showa 7) is famous in history as a disaster known as the "Great Shirokiya Fire." 1662年(寛文2)江戸・日本橋に開業の呉服店白木屋から近代的百貨店へと発展した老舗(しにせ)。
