American public secondary schools. A product of American mass democracy, they were at the forefront of the global trend toward popularizing secondary education. American secondary education was initially modeled on the classical humanist education offered to a small elite at European grammar schools, but schools such as the Academy (1751), which taught practical studies and was founded by B. Franklin, and the Boston Public School (1821), which was the origin of the high school, sought to provide an education that was relevant to the lives of the emerging citizenry.
