Photochemical sensitization

Japanese: 光化学増感 - ひかりかがくぞうかん（英語表記）photochemical sensitization

A type of photochemical reaction in which a substance (photosensitizer) added to a reactant absorbs light and becomes excited, transferring the excitation energy to the reactant, causing a reaction. It is also simply called photosensitization. For example, when hydrogen containing mercury vapor is irradiated with the mercury resonance line with a wavelength of 2537 Å, the following reaction is well known: Hg + h ν―→Hg ^* Hg ^* +H ₂ ―→HgH +H, which produces free hydrogen atoms H and free HgH ( h ν is the photon, and Hg ^* is the mercury atom rich in electronically excited energy (471.5 kJ/mol)).

光化学反応の一種で，反応物質に添加された別の物質(光増感剤)が光を吸収して励起され，これが反応物質に励起エネルギーを譲って反応を起こさせる現象。単に光増感ともいう。たとえば，水銀蒸気を含む水素に，波長が2537Åの水銀共鳴線を当てると，　Hg＋hν―→Hg^*　Hg^*＋H₂―→HgH＋Hのような過程で遊離水素原子Hと遊離HgHが生成する反応は有名である(hνは光量子，Hg^*は電子励起したエネルギー(471.5kJ/mol)に富む水銀原子を表す)。
