An annual plant of the legume family. It is widely distributed from the warm temperate zone to the tropics in eastern and southeastern Asia. In Japan, it grows in fields and grasslands on banks in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The stems are erect and may branch slightly at the top, but are usually solitary and unbranched. The leaves are linear or lanceolate, several centimeters long, and hairless on the upper surface, but densely covered with fine brown hairs on the underside, just like the stems. From summer to autumn, spikes of small, blue-purple, butterfly-shaped flowers grow densely at the tips of the stems. The legumes are oblong, smooth, and hairless.
