A bird of the order Accipitridae and family Accipitridae (illustration). A large sea eagle found along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, it migrates to northern Japan as a winter bird. It particularly visits the lakes and marshes of northeastern and eastern Hokkaido, and on the Shiretoko Peninsula, several hundred birds use a single valley as a roost. It is about 95 cm long and has a wingspan of 220-240 cm. It is larger than a white-tailed sea eagle, with some females weighing up to 9 kg. Its sharp claws are semicircular and about 10 cm in diameter, larger than a lion's tusks. Its entire body is black-brown, but the leading edges of its wings, legs, and tail are white, and its large beak and feet are yellow. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
