1713‐59 King of Spain. Reigned 1746-59. He appointed capable Enlightenment thinkers such as Ensenada to his close aides and pursued a moderate policy that was not biased toward either the British or the French. In particular, he sought to restore the nation's declining power by promoting economic development in the surrounding regions and strengthening state control over culture and education, such as by founding the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1752. In diplomacy, he had the king's authority largely recognized in the Treaty of Peace and Amity with the Vatican (1753), and he always maintained a policy of neutrality in European conflicts, creating the most peaceful period since the 16th century.
