King of Spain. Reigned 1746-59. He appointed capable Enlightenment thinkers such as Ensenada to his close aides and pursued a moderate policy that was not biased toward either the British or the French. In particular, he sought to restore the nation's declining power by promoting economic development in the surrounding regions and strengthening state control over culture and education, such as by founding the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1752. In diplomacy, he had the king's authority largely recognized in the Treaty of Peace and Amity with the Vatican (1753), and he always maintained a policy of neutrality in European conflicts, creating the most peaceful period since the 16th century.

スペイン国王。在位1746‐59年。側近にエンセナダなどの有能な啓蒙主義者を登用し，親英派･親仏派にかたよらない中道の政治を展開した。とくに衰退した国力の回復を意図して，周辺地方の経済発展を促すとともに，1752年には王立サン･フェルナンド美術アカデミーを創立するなど，文化･教育面での国家の統制力を強化した。外交面では，バチカンとの和親条約(1753)で国王の権能を大幅に認めさせ，ヨーロッパの戦いにはつねに中立政策を維持し，16世紀以降で最も平穏な時代を築いた。
