Valenciennes (English spelling)
A city in the northern part of the Nord department in northern France. It is located about 45 km southeast of Lille, overlooking the Escaut River (Schert River) which flows into Belgium. An important center of commerce and industry, with coalfields to the east and producing aluminum, steel pipes, motors, etc. Lace production, which has been an important industry since the late 18th century, is still carried on today. There is an art museum with paintings by Rubens and Van Dyck, a library with one of France's largest collections of manuscripts, and many cathedrals. The area was often the site of battles in ancient times, and prospered under the Counts of Hainaut. It eventually became a French territory with the Peace of Nijmegen (1678). Population 39,276 (1990).
