A former town in Kamimashiki County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. Occupying the southern slope of Mt. Aso's outer rim in the upper reaches of Midorikawa River, it is home to a wide natural forest of beech and zelkova trees, and forestry is thriving. Highland vegetables and sericulture are also practiced, and Yabe tea is a specialty. There is Midorikawa River's Ryokusenkyo gorge, and Tsujun Bridge (Important Cultural Property), an irrigation bridge built in 1855 by headman Nuda Yasunosuke and others. In February 2005, it merged with Soyo Town and Seiwa Village in Aso County to become a town, Yamato Town. 296.42 km2 . Population 12,666 (2003). 熊本県中部,上益城(かみましき)郡の旧町。緑川上流部の阿蘇外輪山南斜面を占め,ブナ,ケヤキなどの天然林が広く,林業が盛ん。高冷地野菜,養蚕なども行われ,矢部茶を特産。緑川の峡谷緑仙峡,1855年惣庄屋布田保之助らにより作られた灌漑(かんがい)用通水橋の通潤(つうじゅん)橋(重文)がある。2005年2月阿蘇郡蘇陽町,清和村と合併し町制,山都町となる。296.42km2。1万2666人(2003)。
