Oyodo River

Japanese:
Oyodo River

The largest river in Miyazaki Prefecture. A first-class river. It originates in the Minami-Naka Mountains at an altitude of about 500 meters in the southern part of the Miyakonojo Basin, flows north through the basin, then flows east to form the Miyazaki Plain and empty into the Hyuga-Nada Sea. It is 107 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 2,230 square kilometers. The drainage area is large compared to its length because it includes both the Miyakonojo and Kobayashi basins, and has many tributaries such as the Honjo River, Hagiwara River, Okimizu River, Shonai River, and Iwase River. The upper reaches of the river erode the Shirasu Plateau, and form a horizontal valley from the Miyakonojo Basin in the middle reaches to the Miyazaki Plain. In the Miyazaki Plain, it flows through the city of Miyazaki, and in addition to natural levees and back marshes, old river channels can be seen. The river mouth has significant sandbars and dunes. The Akae area at the mouth of the river flourished as a river port until around the Taisho era, and boat traffic reached the upstream area of Takaoka. The river is mainly used for agriculture, power generation, and water supply.
