Kamaboko manufacturing industry - Kamaboko manufacturing industry

...Alaska pollock, a representative fish species that is caught in large quantities, has seen a dramatic increase in production (Alaska pollock and mackerel since the mid-1960s, sardines since 1976) due to the development of revolutionary paste processing technology, mackerel through the development of green cutting and canning processing, and sardines through linkage with the fish oil and fertilizer manufacturing industries, resulting in an astonishing annual production of 1 to 3 million tons. This shows nothing less than the establishment of a factory-like production system that organically combines mass fishing with mass production and processing (the sardine catch has dropped sharply since the 1990s, and as a result, the fertilizer feed and oils and fats that use it as the main raw material have also dropped significantly). The dramatic expansion of mass production and processing has contributed to the development of the marine product processing industry, just as Alaska pollock paste has provided a large amount of inexpensive paste product raw material, encouraging the development of the kamaboko manufacturing industry. However, the fragility of mass production processing, which is based on the premise of the "infiniteness" of raw material resources, was fully demonstrated by the economic turmoil in the seafood processing industries of Tohoku and Hokkaido that occurred in 1976-77 when the United States and the Soviet Union declared exclusive economic zones for fishing within 200 nautical miles of each other.
