An old town in Kitamuro District facing the Kumano Sea in the southern part of Mie Prefecture. Most of the town is covered by forest, and it is famous for its cypress timber. The winding coastline is blessed with good harbors, and deep-sea fishing, aquaculture, and seafood processing are thriving. Rice, vegetable cultivation, and livestock farming are also carried out. The Kisei Main Line runs through the town. In October 2005, it was incorporated as a town by merging with Kii-Nagashima Town in Kitamuro District to become Kihoku Town in Kitamuro District. 三重県南部,熊野灘に面する北牟婁(きたむろ)郡の旧町。大部分が森林で,ヒノキ材の産で有名。屈曲の多い海岸は良港に恵まれ,遠洋漁業,養殖漁業,水産加工が盛ん。米作,野菜栽培,畜産も行う。紀勢本線が通じる。2005年10月,北牟婁郡紀伊長島町と合併し町制,北牟婁郡紀北町となる。146.35km2。1万341人(2003)。
