A madrasa (school) named after himself, founded by Nizam al-Mulk, the prime minister of the Seljuk Empire. He promoted Sunni theology and jurisprudence in opposition to the active missionary activities of the Ismailis, and established a school of the same name in Baghdad in 1067 with the aim of training competent civil servants. He established other schools of the same name in major cities within his empire, such as Nishapur, Herat, Isfahan, and Merv, and held the power to appoint and dismiss professors. Ash'ari theology and Shafi'i jurisprudence were the main subjects taught, as well as hadith and literature, and made a great contribution to the development of Islamic culture.
