Portugal's northwestern region includes the counties of Braga and Viana de Castelo. Its capital is Braga. It is roughly between the Minho River (the river that borders Spain) in the north and the Ave River in the south, and accounts for 5.4% of the country's land area, with an area of 4,928 km2 and a population of 954,253 (1980). It has a high population density (194 people/km2). Most of the area is mountainous, except for the coastal plains, and inland there are several mountain ranges of 600 to 1,400 m high that run parallel to each other from east to west. It has the highest precipitation in the country, with an annual precipitation of 3,000 mm in the mountainous areas and 1,463.5 mm in Braga.
