Japanese: 大山綱良 - おおやま・つなよし
Tsunayoshi Oyama
Year of death: September 30, 1877
Year of birth: November 16, 1825 (December 25, 1825)
A samurai of the Satsuma Domain during the late Edo period, and the first governor of Kagoshima Prefecture. Born as the second son of Kabayama Zensuke, he was adopted into the Oyama family. Commonly known as Kakunosuke or Shoen. He rose to prominence as a tea boy, and was a master of the Jigen-ryu style of swordsmanship, unique to Satsuma. He played an important role in the Seichu-gumi, a group that included Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, but in 1862 (Bunkyu 2), he followed the orders of Shimazu Hisamitsu to execute his comrades in the Fushimi Teradaya Incident. In the following year (Bunkyu 3), he served as a military service in the Anglo-Satsuma War, and continued to play an active role as a powerful figure in the Satsuma Domain, working with Okubo to get the Choshu Domain troops to Tokyo in the wake of the Imperial Restoration Coup. In the Boshin War, he was appointed as a staff officer for the pacification of Oshu and Uzen, fighting all over Oshu and Uzen, and distinguished himself in pacifying the Tohoku domains. In 1869 (Meiji 2), he was awarded a prize of 800 koku. In August 1871, he was appointed Grand Councillor of Kagoshima Prefecture, and in 1874, Governor of the same prefecture. After the defeat in the Seikanron Coup (1873), Saigo Takamori and others returned home to run a private school and take up a stance of resistance against the central government. As a prefectural governor, he fully supported the Private School Party and acted together with Saigo and the Private School Party during the Seinan War. In March 1810, he was stripped of his official rank and executed by beheading in Nagasaki in September.
