A type of Greek pottery. A vessel for diluting wine with water. It has a wide rim and a large, bulging body. Depending on the shape of the large, small, vertical, or horizontal handle, they can be categorized as bell-shaped, column-shaped, calyx-shaped, or scroll-shaped. Many examples of bell-kraters can be seen as early as the prehistoric Mycenaean period, and scroll-shaped kraters with large vertical handles were popular from the Hellenistic period through to the Roman period. As their bodies are generally large, they were ideal subjects for ceramic painters to work on. [Maeda Masaaki] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
