...The newly developed recording technology at this time also brought about a great advancement in comparative musicology. In 1890, American anthropologist Jesse Walter Fewkes (1850-1930) was the first to successfully record the songs of Indians from Maine and New Mexico. German psychologist C. Stumpf established the Institute of Psychology at the University of Berlin, but he also had a deep interest in comparative musicology. In 1900, he began to collect recordings of the music of various ethnic groups, and in 1905, he established the Phonogram Archive there.
