Prausnitz-Küstner reaction. A local passive sensitization reaction reported in 1921 by German physiologist C. Prausnitz and obstetrician-gynecologist H. Küstner. Küstner was sensitive to a certain fish, and when he ate that fish he would develop systemic hypersensitivity symptoms such as hives. So, when Prausnitz, who was not sensitive to that fish, was injected intradermally with 0.1 ml of Küstner's serum, and the next day he injected an extract of the fish in the same spot, he experienced severe redness, swelling, and itching.
