Japanese: ハネゴケ

A general term for the genus Plagiochila of the liverwort family Plagiochila. It is the largest genus of liverwort, with about 1,600 species recorded worldwide, many of which are regionally endemic. There are about 20 species in Japan. The leaves overlap like a tile, with serrated edges. The ventral leaves are vestigial. The perianth is flattened on both sides and has a wide mouth. Plagiochila ovalifolia Mitt. is commonly found throughout Japan, and grows in colonies on damp soil or rocks. The plant is green to greenish brown, with an obliquely ascending stem 2 to 5 cm long. The leaves are ovate, with numerous small sawtooth edges.
