Islam is said to have been introduced during the Tang dynasty, and became especially popular after the Yuan dynasty, when many worship temples, called Qingzhen Si in Chinese, were built in various regions. The Huaisheng Temple Light Tower in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, is an ancient relic from the 19th century, and although there are various theories about its date from the 19th century, it is representative of a brick spire with a spiral staircase that faithfully reproduces the original form of a minaret. Qingjing Temple (originally Shengyou Temple) in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, has a large gate with a brick-built hemispherical dome directly descended from a mosque, and a worship hall with a dome that has been lost.

…They are scattered throughout the country, but are particularly numerous in areas with large Hui populations, such as the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in the northwest, Gansu Province, and Inner Mongolia. All were built after the Ming dynasty, except for the Huaisheng Temple in Guangzhou and the Qingjing Temple in Quanzhou, which are thought to date from the Song or Yuan dynasty. 　イスラムは唐代に伝えられたといい，とくに元代以降はさかんになり，各地に漢名を清真寺という礼拝寺院が数多く建てられた。年代の古い遺構としては広東省広州の懐聖寺光塔が，年代に諸説あるが，ミナレットの原型を忠実に伝えた，螺旋階段をもつ塼造尖塔として代表的。福建省泉州の清浄寺(本来は聖友寺)にはモスク直系の半球ドームを塼積みにした大門とドームの失われた礼拝殿がある。…
