The third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk (reigned 1952-72), who ascended to the throne in 1952, strengthened ties with India and promoted modernization in the wake of the Tibetan uprising of 1959. Throughout the 1960s, he emancipated serfs, limited land ownership to 30 acres per person, introduced modern education in Hindi, established a National Assembly and Supreme Court, and created a postal system.
