Willem Kalf

Willem Kalf

Dutch painter. Born in Rotterdam, died in Amsterdam. He lived in France from 1640 to 1645, and was active in Amsterdam thereafter. He displayed extraordinary talent for still life painting at the time, and excelled in painting breakfast tables, mainly featuring cups, bottles, vases, fruit plates, and other glassware, as well as silver and ceramics. Painted with precise composition and delicate use of color, these still lifes are not only excellent in terms of painting, but also have great cultural historical significance due to their accurate depiction of materials. His use of light and color is strongly influenced by Rembrandt. His works are in museums such as the Louvre, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Berlin, and Dresden.
